Maryland stuns No. 3 North Carolina in OT
NCAA Basketball Betting Lines
02/21/2009 -
College Park, MD (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Greivis Vasquez had a triple-double with a
career-high 35 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists, as Maryland stunned third-
ranked North Carolina, 88-85, in an overtime thriller at Comcast Center.
Vasquez, who recorded Maryland's first triple-double since 1987, sent the
crowd into a frenzy with a three-pointer with 1:16 left in the extra session
to put Maryland ahead 84-81. With 35.3 seconds to go, Vasquez fouled Ty Lawson
on a long-range deuce. Lawson knocked down both of his foul shots to cut the
lead to one.
Following the inbound pass, the Terrapins were able to keep the ball away from
North Carolina, which was forced to foul because there was no time left on the
shot clock. UNC's Bobby Frasor finally fouled Eric Hayes with just 11.3 to go.
Hayes hit both shots from the stripe to make it a three-point game.
After a pair of Wayne Ellington and Vasquez foul shots, North Carolina was
down by three with 4.2 ticks left. Tyler Hansbrough inbounded the ball to
Lawson, who couldn't get a shot off because of a swarming Maryland defense.
Cliff Tucker added 22 points and six rebounds for the Terrapins (17-9, 6-6
ACC), who are trying to avoid missing the NCAA tournament for the fourth time
in five years. Hayes ended with 17 points.
Lawson paced North Carolina (24-3, 10-3) with 24 points. Danny Green finished
with 18 points and nine rebounds for the Tar Heels, who were riding a 10-game
winning streak. Ellington had 14 points and Deon Thompson ended with 13.
Hansbrough contributed a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards.
Trailing 62-52, the Terrapins used a 10-2 spurt to cut the UNC lead to just
two with 6:39 remaining in regulation. Tucker's three-pointer culminated the
run.
UNC hung tough, though, as they responded by rattling off eight unanswered
points to take a 72-62 lead with 4:09 to go. Hansbrough capitalized on his own
rebound with a layup to culminate the run, in what seemed to be the final
blow.
Leading 76-67 with less than two minutes remaining, UNC crumbled when it
counted, allowing Maryland to score nine unanswered points and send the game
to overtime.
After a Tucker shot from beyond the arc, North Carolina turned the ball over
on the inbound pass and Vasquez made a layup to cut the margin to 76-72 with
1:24 left. Hayes' layup with 1:05 remaining cut the gap to two.
Following a UNC timeout, Green missed a jumper with 23 ticks left. Vasquez's
driving layup with only eight seconds remaining tied the game and made an
upset seem possible. Lawson's misfire on a jumper as time expired sent the
game into overtime.
The Tar Heels built an early margin with six consecutive points to start the
contest. Hansbrough made two layups and Thompson capped off the small spurt
with a jumper.
Maryland didn't let the initial burst by UNC rattle them. Trailing 15-9 with
just under 15 minutes left in the half, the Terrapins used a 9-2 spurt to take
a 18-17 lead, their first of the game. Adrian Bowie culminated the run with a
pair of free throws with under 12 minutes to go.
North Carolina responded in a big way, scoring 10 unanswered points to build a
27-18 cushion.
The remainder of the first half was dominated by UNC, who led by as many as 12
and took a 39-30 advantage into the locker room.
Thompson led the Tar Heels with 11 points at the break, while Vasquez spurred
the Terrapins with 16 points. Maryland held Hansbrough to just six points
during the initial 20 minutes.
Ahead 43-34, North Carolina ripped off seven straight points to go ahead by
16, 50-34, with about 15 minutes left. Ellington tallied five points during
the spurt, including two shots from the stripe to culminate the run.
Trailing 52-36, Maryland went on a 13-2 run to cut the gap to five, 54-49,
setting up a very exciting finish.
Game Notes

NFL betting action is back! At MySportsbook, all of the pro football odds are posted for the NFC North.
Check out how we see the four teams in this cloudy division stacking up this year in the chase for the playoffs! Green Bay Packers (+125) - With QB Aaron Rodgers leading the offense and DC Dom Capers working his magic on defense, the Packers are a real force to be reckoned with.
Virtually nothing changed on this offense for Green Bay from last year to this year, save for the addition of rookie OT Brian Bulaga to the bunch. Expect more huge numbers from the Pack, and a relatively favorable schedule should get them over the hump and into the playoffs once again this season. My NFL Betting Predictions: 11-5, 1st place in NFC North Minnesota Vikings (+130) - There are still too many unknowns about the Vikes this year. There is a huge difference between QB Brett Favre and either Tarvaris Jackson or Sage Rosenfels under center. Plus, is Favre comes back, is he really going to be able to keep his pick total under double digits again? Depth at running back looked like it might have been an issue with RB Chester Taylor fleeing in free agency, but drafting RB Toby Gerhart should pick up the difference. This defense is still suitable, but with a first place schedule, making the playoffs is going to be very tough regardless of whether #4 comes back or not.

Chicago Bears (+350) - The Bears are probably a bit of an overhyped team once again this year. No, we don't think it is plausible for QB Jay Cutler to have as bad of a season as he did last year, and we do think the additions of RB Chester Taylor and DE Julius Peppers are going to help immensely, but there's still something in the water in the Windy City that we aren't so sure about. Maybe Chicago finds its way to .500... but then again, maybe it doesn't. If Favre comes back, Cutler might be the worst quarterback in this division this year.
Detroit Lions (+1500) - The Lions are probably once again going to be the whipping boys for the rest of the teams in the NFC North, but they aren't just going to roll over and die once again. There is some real talent amassing on this team offensively, as the combination of QB Matt Stafford, RB Jahvid Best, WR Calvin Johnson, and TE Brandon Pettigrew should put a bunch of points on the board if the offensive line can even remotely hold up. The questions really lie on defense, where it feels like DT Ndamukong Suh is going to be trying to stop opposing teams all by himself. This year should show some marked improvement in the Motor City.
The Patriots will make NFL betting fans a lot of money this season, get in early and enjoy the cash. NFL Betting
